Product Description
The Simpson BA4.28/9.5 is a top-flange joist hanger built for structural framing connections involving double 2-1/4 in. x 9-1/2 in. engineered wood members and solid sawn lumber. Part of Simpson's cost-effective BA series, this hanger is designed to carry medium loads with solid sawn lumber and higher loads with engineered wood products, making it a practical, load-appropriate solution across a range of residential and light commercial framing applications. Min./max. nailing options give engineers and contractors the design versatility to meet varying load demands with a single connector, and G90 galvanized 12-gauge steel construction delivers the durability needed for long-term performance in demanding conditions.
Key Features
- Two-level embossment at the top flange - increases flange stiffness for a more rigid, stable connection that maintains alignment under load
- Full-height joist flange that captures the top chord of the joist - prevents joist rotation and eliminates the need for web stiffeners, reducing labor and material costs on the job
- Min./max. nailing options - minimum nailing targets moderate load demands, whereas maximum nailing allows higher loads, giving designers flexibility within a single hanger model
- Made from 12-gauge steel - provides the structural strength required for medium-to-higher load engineered wood and solid sawn lumber connections
- G90 zinc galvanized finish - delivers extra corrosion resistance to extend service life in moisture-exposed framing environments
- Available for special order to accommodate sloped and/or skewed members - adapts to non-standard framing angles so builders are not limited to square connections only
Why This Product
- Engineered for both EWP and solid sawn lumber - the BA series is specifically designed to carry higher loads with engineered wood products and medium loads with solid sawn lumber, making this hanger genuinely versatile across framing material types rather than optimized for only one
- Eliminates the need for web stiffeners - the full-height joist flange captures the top chord of the joist and controls rotation on its own, cutting down on additional hardware and installation steps for a cleaner, faster connection
- Built-in load-level flexibility through nailing patterns - contractors and engineers can dial load capacity up or down simply by adjusting fastener quantity, giving a single hanger the range to serve multiple project conditions without switching to a different connector
- Heavy-duty galvanized construction made in the United States - 12-gauge steel with a G90 zinc galvanized coating means this hanger is built to hold up in real-world framing conditions where exposure to moisture is a concern, backed by a manufacturer with a well-established reputation in structural connectors

Approved Applications
- Engineered wood product (EWP) framing requiring top-flange support
- Solid sawn lumber joist and beam connections at medium load levels
- Structural framing applications requiring prevention of joist rotation without web stiffeners
- Projects where design versatility through minimum and maximum nailing options is required
Installation
Install with 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist. Minimum nailing targets moderate load demands; maximum nailing allows higher loads for greater design flexibility.
Options
- Other widths are available; specify W dimension (the minimum W dimension is 1 9/16").
- For modified hangers, fastener quantity listed in tables may need to increase depending on joist size, skew and slope. All modified hangers are 12 ga.
- Hangers may be modified for slopes and/or skews up to 45 deg.. The top flanges may be sloped as much as 35 deg. and may be open or closed up to 30 deg.. See Modifications and Associated Load Reductions under Specifications
