Product Description
The Simpson BA5.12/18 Top-Flange Joist Hanger is built for double 2-1/2 in. x 18 in. engineered wood and solid sawn lumber framing applications where reliable load transfer and rotation control are critical. As a top-flange hanger, it seats directly over the header, delivering medium load capacity with solid sawn lumber and higher load capacity with engineered wood products. The positive-angle nailing (PAN) system accommodates both minimum nailing for moderate load conditions and maximum nailing configurations for heavier structural demands, all in a single, cost-effective formed piece made from 12-gauge steel with a G90 galvanized finish.
Key Features
- Cost-effective one-piece design - eliminates the added expense and complexity of welded hangers, reducing material and labor costs on the job site.
- Full-height joist flange - captures the top chord of the joist to prevent rotation and eliminate the need for web stiffeners, simplifying installation and reducing the number of additional components required.
- Positive-angle nailing (PAN) - guides fasteners into the correct angle automatically, supporting both moderate and higher load conditions with minimum or maximum nailing configurations.
- 12-gauge steel construction - provides the structural strength needed for engineered wood product framing applications where heavier members and higher loads are common.
- G90 zinc galvanized finish - delivers extra corrosion resistance, making this hanger suitable for framing environments where moisture exposure is a concern.
- Available for sloped and/or skewed member configurations - adapts to non-standard framing angles up to 45 deg., giving builders flexibility for complex structural layouts without sourcing a separate product.
Why This Product
- One hanger works across load conditions - the PAN design supports both minimum and maximum nailing schedules, so the same hanger handles moderate framing applications with solid sawn lumber and higher-demand installations with engineered wood products.
- Rotation control is built in - the full-height joist flange captures the top chord and prevents joist rotation without requiring web stiffeners, cutting down on extra hardware and installation steps.
- Engineered for larger engineered wood members - sized specifically for double 2-1/2 in. x 18 in. members, this hanger is purpose-built for the deeper engineered wood products commonly used in modern floor and roof framing systems.
- Durable finish for long-term performance - the G90 galvanized coating provides extra corrosion resistance beyond standard galvanizing, helping protect the connection over the life of the structure.

Approved Applications
- Engineered wood product framing applications requiring top-flange joist support
- Solid sawn lumber framing applications at moderate to higher load conditions
- Installations requiring positive-angle nailing (PAN) for secure fastener placement
- Framing assemblies where web stiffeners need to be eliminated through full-height joist flange support
- Sloped and/or skewed member applications (available for special order configurations)
Installation
Install with 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist. The positive-angle nailing (PAN) design guides fasteners into the correct angle for reliable load transfer. The full-height joist flange captures the top chord of the joist, preventing rotation without requiring additional web stiffeners.
Options
- Other widths are available; specify W dimension (the minimum W dimension is 1 9/16").
- For modified hangers, fastener quantity listed in tables may need to increase depending on joist size, skew and slope. All modified hangers are 12 ga.
- Hangers may be modified for slopes and/or skews up to 45 deg.. The top flanges may be sloped as much as 35 deg. and may be open or closed up to 30 deg.. See Modifications and Associated Load Reductions under Specifications

Frequently Asked Questions
What size joist is the BA5.12/18 designed to support?
The BA5.12/18 is designed specifically for a double 2-1/2 in. x 18 in. member. It is compatible with both engineered wood products and solid sawn lumber of that size.
What type of nails are required to install this hanger?
Installation requires 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist.
Does this hanger require web stiffeners during installation?
No. The BA5.12/18 features a full-height joist flange that captures the top chord of the joist to prevent rotation, which eliminates the need for web stiffeners.
Can this hanger be used for sloped or skewed framing applications?
The standard BA5.12/18 is not configured for sloped or skewed installations, but it is available for special order to accommodate sloped and/or skewed members.
