Product Description

The CMT 855.504.11 Lock Miter Router Bit from CMT is a precision-engineered joinery bit designed to produce strong, self-aligning 45 deg. miter joints for boxes, frames, stretcher bars, and right-angle assemblies. Featuring a 2" diameter, 7/8" cutting height, and 1/2" shank, this tungsten carbide-tipped bit handles solid hardwood, softwood, sheet goods, and composites with a clean, accurate cut every time. Its anti-kickback body geometry and right-hand rotation make it a reliable choice for both router table use and production-level joinery work. The same bit can also be used for parallel glue joint milling, giving woodworkers a versatile two-in-one solution for a wide range of panel and frame construction tasks.

Key Features

  • Anti-Kickback Design - controls the depth of cut on each pass, reducing the risk of sudden kickback and giving the operator more confident, stable control at the router table.
  • Tungsten Carbide (HW) Cutting Edges - hard-wearing carbide tips stay sharp longer through repeated cuts in hardwood, softwood, plywood, MDF, and similar materials, reducing downtime for resharpening.
  • 45 deg. Miter Angle - produces precise interlocking lock miter joints that self-align during glue-up, eliminating the need for complex clamping setups when assembling boxes, frames, or parallel joints.
  • 2-Flute (2-Tooth) Configuration - dual cutting edges deliver a balanced, smooth cut and help maintain consistent feed rates across varying wood species and thicknesses.
  • 1/2" Shank Diameter - the full 1/2" shank provides maximum stability and reduced vibration in router table collets, resulting in cleaner joint surfaces and improved bit longevity.
  • Material Thickness Range: 3/8" to 3/4" - accommodates a practical range of workpiece thicknesses, making it suitable for drawer box sides, cabinet carcasses, decorative frames, and light panel construction.
  • Dual-Purpose Bit - Lock Miter and Parallel Joinery - the same single bit can mill both interlocking miter joints and parallel glue joints by simply repositioning the workpiece, maximizing value from one tooling investment.
  • Right-Hand (RH) Rotation - standard right-hand rotation is compatible with all conventional routers and router tables, requiring no special equipment or adapters.

Why This Product

  • Lock miter joints produced with this bit are self-aligning and self-clamping during assembly, which dramatically simplifies glue-up of boxes, frames, and corner joints without the need for elaborate jig setups or corner clamps.
  • The anti-kickback body geometry limits the amount of material removed per pass, making this bit safer and more predictable to run on a router table - especially valuable when working with hardwoods or wider stock near the upper end of the 3/4" maximum thickness.
  • By repositioning the workpiece, the same bit mills parallel glue joints - so one bit covers both 45 deg. miter corner work and straight panel edge joinery, reducing the number of specialty bits needed in the shop.
  • The 2" cutting diameter and 7/8" cutting height, combined with the 1/2" shank, are sized for a stable, vibration-free cut in a standard router table setup, producing clean, tight-fitting joints that need minimal hand fitting before glue-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What material thickness range does this lock miter bit handle?

This bit is rated for workpiece thicknesses from 3/8" to 3/4". Stock outside this range will not produce a properly centered, interlocking joint and should not be run with this bit.

Can this bit be used for both lock miter joints and parallel glue joints?

Yes. To cut a lock miter joint, position the workpiece vertically against the fence with the inside face toward the bit. To mill a parallel glue joint, lay the workpiece flat on the router table centered to the bit with the inside face up for the second part. The same bit handles both operations without any tooling change.

Does this bit require a router table, or can it be used handheld?

Lock miter bits are designed for use on a router table. A router table provides the stable, repeatable bit height and fence positioning that lock miter joinery requires to produce tight, self-aligning fits. Handheld use is not suitable for this type of bit and joint profile.

What is the anti-kickback design on this bit, and why does it matter?

The anti-kickback body limits how much material the bit can engage in a single pass. This controls the depth of cut and reduces the likelihood of the workpiece being grabbed and thrown by the bit during routing - an important safety and quality benefit when running large-diameter joinery bits at the router table.
