Product Description

The Simpson SUL2.1/11 SUL Galvanized Joist Hanger for 2-1/16 in. x 11-7/8 in. Engineered Wood, Skewed Left is a 16-gauge, U-shaped connector from Simpson engineered to deliver a strong, reliable connection where a joist meets a header at a left-hand 45 deg. angle. Designed to support both solid sawn and engineered wood products in wood-frame construction, this hanger encapsulates the top flange of the joist so that no web stiffeners are required for standard installation - simplifying the framing process without sacrificing structural integrity.

Key Features

  • Skewed left (SUL) at 45 deg. - purpose-built for left-hand angled framing connections, eliminating the guesswork of field-bending and ensuring a precise, code-compliant fit every time
  • Accommodates a 40 deg. to 50 deg. skew range - provides a practical tolerance window around the nominal 45 deg. angle, giving installers flexibility when field conditions are not perfectly exact
  • Obround nail holes on the acute side - allow nails to be driven parallel to the joist in a tight, angled space, making fastening faster and less awkward in skewed framing situations
  • Positive-angle nailing designed for engineered wood sizes - reduces the risk of wood splitting during installation and speeds up the fastening process, which is especially important when working with LVL and other engineered lumber products
  • U-shaped design encapsulates the top flange of the joist - eliminates the need for web stiffeners during standard installation, reducing material costs and cutting installation time
  • Made from 16-gauge steel - provides the structural thickness needed to handle the loads typical of residential and light commercial joist and rafter connections
  • G90 zinc galvanized finish - offers corrosion resistance suitable for treated lumber applications and exposed framing environments, helping the hanger maintain its integrity over the life of the structure

Why This Product

  • Factory-set skew means no field modification required - because the SUL2.1/11 cannot and does not need to be modified, installers get a consistently accurate 45 deg. left-skewed connection without the risk of a weakened or improperly bent hanger compromising the joint
  • Engineered specifically for engineered wood - the positive-angle nailing pattern and precise seat width are sized for 2-1/16 in. x 11-7/8 in. engineered lumber, making this hanger a direct, no-compromise fit rather than an adapted workaround
  • Dual fastener options for job-site flexibility - the hanger can be installed with conventional nails or with Strong-Drive SD Connector screws, letting crews use the fastening method that best suits their tools and workflow without sacrificing load performance
  • Corrosion-resistant construction for long-term reliability - the G90 galvanized coating makes this connector well-suited for use alongside pressure-treated framing members, helping protect the connection point against the accelerated corrosion that untreated steel can suffer in those environments

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the SUR and the SUL hanger?
The SUR and SUL hangers are identical in construction except for their skew direction. The SUR is skewed 45 deg. to the right, while the SUL is skewed 45 deg. to the left. Choose the SUL when your joist meets the header at a left-hand 45 deg. angle.
Can the SUL2.1/11 be field-modified to adjust the skew angle?
No. These hangers cannot be modified in the field. However, the SUL2.1/11 is designed to accommodate a joist skewed anywhere from 40 deg. to 50 deg., providing a small degree of flexibility around the nominal 45 deg. angle.
Are web stiffeners required when installing the SUL2.1/11?
No web stiffeners are required for standard installation. The U-shaped design encapsulates the top flange of the joist, which eliminates this requirement and simplifies the installation process.
What fasteners are required to install the SUL2.1/11?
Install with (16) 0.162 x 3-1/2 in. nails in the face and (2) 0.148 x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist, OR (18) #9 x 1-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD Connector screws (SD9112). The obround nail holes on the acute side allow nails to be installed parallel to the joist for easier fastening.
