Product Description

The Simpson Strong-Tie 4X Beam Column Cap with a 6.5-inch column height, hot-dip galvanized finish is a heavy-duty structural connector built for reliable column-to-beam connections on top of steel columns and posts. Its legless design is engineered for field-welded attachment, making it a practical choice for structural applications in high-wind and seismic zones where increased uplift capacity and NDS-compliant performance are required.

Key Features

  • Legless design for field-welded attachment - allows direct welding to steel columns, pipe columns, and other steel profiles, giving installers flexibility across a wide range of structural column types without the need for prefitted legs
  • Extended seat bearing surface - distributes beam loads beyond each side of the column, reducing point stress and helping ensure a more stable, code-consistent connection
  • Increased uplift load capacity - engineered to handle the elevated forces present in earthquake and high-wind loading scenarios, making this cap a sound choice for seismic and wind-critical structures
  • NDS-compliant bolt spacing - bolt hole sizing and spacing meet National Design Specification requirements, supporting structural integrity and simplifying the inspection and approval process on job sites
  • 7-gauge steel construction with hot-dip galvanized finish - provides the material strength and corrosion resistance needed for demanding structural environments, including exposed or outdoor applications

Why This Product

  • Built for corrosion-resistant structural use - the hot-dip galvanized finish delivers durable protection against moisture and environmental exposure, helping this column cap maintain its load-transfer performance over time in demanding conditions
  • Engineered for high-wind and seismic applications - with uplift loads specifically increased for earthquake and wind loading, this connector is well suited to projects in regions where code-required uplift resistance is a priority
  • Flexible field installation - the legless, field-weld design means the cap can be adapted to pipe columns or custom steel profiles on site, reducing the need for specialty pre-fabricated parts and keeping structural connections straightforward
  • Consistent code compliance built in - bolt hole tolerances and spacing that meet NDS requirements are incorporated into the design, helping contractors and engineers avoid costly rework and maintain confidence in structural approval

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of columns is the CCO4/6HDG designed to attach to?
The CCO4/6HDG features a legless design specifically intended for field-welded attachment to steel columns and posts. It can also be ordered for field welding to pipe or other column profiles, with welding performed by the designer.
Why does the seat of the CCO column cap extend beyond the column sides?
The extended seat of the column cap provides additional surface area for bearing that reaches beyond each side of the column. This design helps distribute the load from the beam more evenly and provides enhanced support at the connection point.
Is the CCO4/6HDG suitable for use in high-wind or seismic regions?
Yes. The CCO4/6HDG is engineered with increased uplift load capacity specifically to address the demands of earthquake and wind loading conditions, making it well-suited for use in seismic and high-wind design applications.
What are the bolt hole requirements for installing the CCO4/6HDG?
Per 2018 NDS, section 12.1.3.2, bolt holes must be a minimum of 1/32" to a maximum of 1/16" larger than the bolt diameter. Holes should be drilled from one side all the way through the beam to maintain proper hole tolerances and ensure a code-compliant connection.
