Product Description
The Baileigh Geared Head Metal Lathe PL-1340 is a precision-built machine from Baileigh engineered for shops, schools, and fabrication facilities that demand accurate, repeatable turning operations. Powered by a 2 hp motor on 220-volt single-phase power, this geared head lathe delivers 8 selectable speeds from 70 to 2,000 rpm and arrives factory-equipped with a Mitutoyo digital readout - putting shop-grade accuracy and convenience within reach of any serious metalworking operation.
Key Features
- 2 hp motor runs on 220-volt single-phase power with 8 speeds from 70 to 2,000 rpm, making it ideal for shops with limited power (assembly required)
- Factory installed Mitutoyo DRO (digital readout) enables precise cuts right out of the box
- Capable of making both metric and standard threads for maximum versatility
- Quick-change 4-way tool post saves time and reduces setup hassle between operations
- All movement of the machining carriage rides on precision ground and hardened slideways for consistent accuracy
- Gap lathe design allows removal of a section of the slide to accommodate a slightly larger diameter workpiece
- Best-in-class iron castings support the ways and maintain high accuracy over many years of use
- Emergency foot brake for fast, safe stops during operation
- Halogen work light illuminates the cutting area for improved visibility
- Flood coolant system with backsplash guard prolongs machine life by managing heat during cuts

Frequently Asked Questions
- What power supply does the PL-1340 require?
- The PL-1340 runs on 220-volt single-phase power via its 2 hp motor, making it a practical choice for shops that do not have three-phase power available.
- Does this lathe come with a digital readout already installed?
- Yes. The PL-1340 comes with a factory installed Mitutoyo DRO (digital readout), so you can begin making precise cuts without purchasing or mounting a separate readout unit.
- Can the PL-1340 cut both metric and standard threads?
- Yes. This lathe is capable of making both metric and standard threads, giving operators the flexibility to work across a wide range of threading specifications.
- What is a gap lathe, and how does it benefit me?
- A gap lathe allows you to remove a section of the slide to fit a slightly larger diameter workpiece than the standard swing would otherwise permit. This adds versatility when you occasionally need to turn oversized parts without requiring a larger machine.

FREIGHT SHIPMENTS
It is important to assess the product being shipped against your location and material-handling capabilities.
Please be aware that your location needs to be prepared to properly handle and sign for freight shipments. You need to have access to a dock location, a forklift or the ability to unload the product from the freight carrier's trailer.
If your location does not have a traditional loading dock or forklift to unload your LTL freight out of the trailer, a Lift gate service will be required. There will be an additional charge for the service. It varies by carrier and even by market with different carriers. It often depends on the supply and demand of lift gate equipped trucks in your area.
Some machines require Flatbed shipping. There will be an additional charge for this service. Flatbed shipping is for the transportation of cargo that cannot be loaded or unloaded from a dock, or does not fit within the dimensions of standard truck trailers. A flatbed’s design allows for cranes and forklifts to load goods from all angles.
If a shipment is too heavy or the footprint (i.e., panel saws, metalworking lathes, mill/drills) is too large to ship via small parcel carrier (USPS, UPS or FedEx), it is shipped via a freight carrier. Freight shipments are considered tail gate deliveries, meaning that the driver is only responsible for moving the shipment to the rear of the trailer and will not assist with unloading.
For non-commercial deliveries, the freight carrier will contact you to schedule a delivery window and confirm if lift gate services are required. If lift gate service is requested, the driver is responsible for lowering the product to the ground during delivery. Freight shipments delivered to a residential location are considered curb side deliveries, meaning the driver will make the delivery in the street at the end of the customer’s driveway. Freight Carriers are not required to enter driveways to make residential deliveries due to liability and safety issues.
Although most deliveries go smoothly, sometimes there are exceptions beyond our control. Machines weighing over 2,000 pounds, bulky and oversized machines with a large footprint may not be able to be delivered via a lift gate for risk of injury or damage to the machine. There are also inaccessible remote, residential or high density urban areas that freight carriers cannot safely access. If encountered, such shipments are available for dock delivery or will be required to be picked up from the carrier’s terminal.
