Product Description

The Simpson BA4.12/16 is a top-flange joist hanger built for double 2 in. x 16 in. engineered wood and solid sawn lumber framing applications. Part of Simpson's cost-effective BA series, this hanger is designed to carry medium loads with solid sawn lumber and higher loads with engineered wood products, making it a versatile choice across floor and roof framing systems. Formed from 12-gauge steel with a G90 zinc galvanized finish, it delivers durable corrosion resistance alongside structural performance for demanding framing assemblies.

Key Features

  • Two-level embossment at the top flange - provides increased stiffness at the connection point, improving overall structural rigidity without additional hardware.
  • Full-height joist flange design - captures the top chord of the joist to prevent rotation and eliminate the need for web stiffeners, saving time and reducing material costs on the job site.
  • Min./max. nailing options - minimum nailing targets moderate load demands, whereas maximum nailing allows higher loads, giving engineers and contractors built-in design versatility for varying project requirements.
  • 12-gauge steel construction - provides the structural integrity needed to support medium-to-higher load-carrying capacity in engineered wood product framing including LVL, PSL, LSL, and glulam applications.
  • G90 zinc galvanized finish - offers extra corrosion resistance suited for framing environments where long-term durability is a priority.
  • Available in sloped and/or skewed configurations - accommodates non-standard framing angles without requiring field modifications, keeping installations clean and code-consistent.

Why This Product

  • Engineered for both solid sawn lumber and engineered wood - the BA series design carries medium loads with solid sawn lumber and steps up to higher load capacity with engineered wood products like LVL and glulam, meaning one hanger model adapts to a broader range of structural framing scenarios.
  • Eliminates extra labor steps - the full-height joist flange prevents joist rotation and removes the need for web stiffeners, which translates directly to fewer parts to install and faster framing on double 2 in. x 16 in. joist assemblies.
  • Flexible nailing schedule for load customization - the built-in min./max. nailing targets let contractors or engineers dial in the exact load performance required by the application, without switching to a different hanger size or series.
  • Domestic manufacturing with protective coating - made in the United States and finished with a G90 galvanized coating for added corrosion resistance, supporting quality-conscious projects where material standards and longevity matter.

Approved Applications

  • Engineered wood product (EWP) framing, including LVL, PSL, LSL, and glulam beams
  • Solid sawn lumber framing requiring top-flange hanger connections
  • Floor and roof framing systems with double 2 in. x 16 in. joist members
  • Applications requiring medium to higher load-carrying capacity depending on nailing schedule
  • Framing assemblies where joist rotation prevention is critical
  • Projects where web stiffeners would otherwise be required

Installation

Install the BA4.12/16 with 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist. The full-height joist flange engages the top chord of the joist to resist rotation. Select minimum or maximum nailing patterns based on the load demands of your specific application. For sloped or skewed framing conditions, a modified version is available - see the Options section below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size lumber or engineered wood is the BA4.12/16 designed to support?

The BA4.12/16 is designed specifically for double 2 in. x 16 in. members. It is compatible with both engineered wood products and solid sawn lumber, though it is rated to carry higher loads when used with engineered wood and medium loads when used with solid sawn lumber.

What nails are required to install the BA4.12/16?

Installation requires 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist. The hanger features minimum and maximum nailing options, allowing minimum nailing for moderate load demands and maximum nailing when higher loads are required.

Does this hanger require web stiffeners during installation?

No. The BA4.12/16 features a full-height joist flange that captures the top chord of the joist to prevent rotation, which eliminates the need for web stiffeners. This can save time and materials during framing.

Can the BA4.12/16 be used for sloped or skewed framing applications?

The standard BA4.12/16 is not configured for sloped or skewed members, but it is available for special order to accommodate sloped and/or skewed installations. Contact your supplier to inquire about ordering a version tailored to your specific framing angle requirements.
