Product Description
The Simpson BA2.56/18 is a top-flange joist hanger built for 2-1/2 in. x 18 in. engineered wood and solid sawn lumber framing. Part of the cost-effective BA series from Simpson, this hanger is designed to carry medium loads with solid sawn lumber and higher loads with engineered wood products, making it a versatile choice across a range of structural framing applications. Min./max. nailing options give designers and installers the flexibility to meet varying load demands with a single hardware solution, while 12-gauge steel construction with a G90 zinc galvanized coating delivers durable, corrosion-resistant performance.
Key Features
- Two-level embossment at the top flange - provides increased stiffness, adding structural rigidity right where load transfer begins.
- Full-height joist flange - captures the top chord of the joist to prevent rotation and eliminate the need for web stiffeners, reducing material costs and installation steps.
- Min./max. nailing options - minimum nailing targets moderate load demands, whereas maximum nailing allows higher loads, giving engineers and framers built-in design versatility without switching hardware.
- Available for special order to accommodate sloped and/or skewed members - supports complex framing geometries, expanding the range of structural applications this hanger can serve.
- 12-gauge steel construction - delivers heavy-duty strength suited to medium and higher load engineered wood connections without oversizing the hanger profile.
- G90 zinc galvanized coating - provides extra corrosion resistance, helping the hanger hold up in demanding construction environments over the long term.
Why This Product
- One hanger, two load levels - the min./max. nailing design means a single BA2.56/18 can be installed to meet moderate or higher load requirements, reducing the need to stock multiple hanger models for different framing scenarios.
- Eliminates web stiffeners - the full-height joist flange captures the top chord of the joist and prevents rotation, cutting out extra materials and labor that web stiffeners would otherwise require.
- Cost-effective fit for engineered wood framing - the BA series is purpose-built as a cost-effective solution that still delivers higher load performance when paired with engineered wood products, making it a practical choice for modern floor and roof framing systems.
- Made in the United States with G90 galvanized protection - heavy-gauge domestic steel with a G90 galvanized finish means this hanger is built to resist corrosion and perform reliably in the structural applications where it is rated.

Approved Applications
- Engineered wood joist and beam connections requiring top-flange hanger support
- Solid sawn lumber framing applications at medium load levels
- Applications where preventing joist rotation without web stiffeners is required
- Structural framing designs that require flexibility between minimum and maximum nailing load schedules
Installation
Install with 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist. The full-height joist flange captures the top chord of the joist, preventing rotation and eliminating the need for web stiffeners. Minimum nailing satisfies moderate load conditions; maximum nailing is required for higher load applications.
Options
- Other widths are available; specify W dimension (the minimum W dimension is 1 9/16").
- For modified hangers, fastener quantity listed in tables may need to increase depending on joist size, skew and slope. All modified hangers are 12 ga.
- Hangers may be modified for slopes and/or skews up to 45 deg.. The top flanges may be sloped as much as 35 deg. and may be open or closed up to 30 deg.. See Modifications and Associated Load Reductions under Specifications

Frequently Asked Questions
What size joist is the BA2.56/18 designed to fit?
The BA2.56/18 is designed to fit a joist measuring 2-1/2 in. x 18 in. This applies to both engineered wood products and solid sawn lumber of that dimension.
What nails should be used to install the BA2.56/18?
Install the BA2.56/18 with 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails in the header and 0.148 in. x 1-1/2 in. nails in the joist. Minimum nailing is suited for moderate load demands, while maximum nailing allows for higher loads.
Does the BA2.56/18 require web stiffeners during installation?
No. The full-height joist flange captures the top chord of the joist to prevent rotation, which eliminates the need for web stiffeners.
Can the BA2.56/18 be used for sloped or skewed framing applications?
The standard BA2.56/18 is not configured for sloped or skewed members, but it is available for special order to accommodate those conditions. Contact the manufacturer for special-order options.
