Product Description

CMT Bead and Bull Nose Bit - 1 in. Diameter, 7/8 in. Cutting Height, 3/16 in. Radius, 1/4 in. Shank by CMT is a precision-ground, 2-flute router bit engineered to produce elegantly rounded bead and bull nose edge profiles on stair treads, window sills, shelves, and furniture components in a single pass. Crafted from HW (tungsten carbide) with right-hand rotation, this bit delivers smooth, repeatable profiles on hardwood, softwood, and sheet goods alike. Whether you need a classic beaded edge on cabinetry shelving or a refined bull nose on a window sill, this router bit handles the work cleanly and efficiently at the router table.

Key Features

  • 2-Flute Tungsten Carbide (HW) Construction - two cutting edges made from industrial-grade hard metal deliver clean, smooth profiles with reduced chatter, extending cutting life between sharpenings.
  • 3/16 in. Radius Bead and Bull Nose Profile - creates a full, elegantly rounded bead edge in a single router table pass, eliminating the need for multiple setups or secondary sanding steps.
  • 1/4 in. Shank Diameter - fits a wide range of standard 1/4 in. collet routers and router tables, making this bit accessible for hobbyists and professional woodworkers with common equipment.
  • 1 in. Overall Cutting Diameter - sized to allow the bead diameter to exceed typical stock thickness on window sills and shelves, producing a pronounced, furniture-quality profile.
  • 7/8 in. Total Cutting Height with 3/8 in. Upper Cutting Height - generous cutting depth handles standard dimensional lumber and sheet stock in a single setup without repositioning the workpiece.
  • Right-Hand (RH) Rotation - compatible with the standard rotation direction of virtually all handheld routers and router table spindles, ensuring correct chip ejection and a clean finished surface.
  • 2-1/8 in. Total Length - compact overall length keeps the bit stable and well-supported in the collet, reducing vibration and improving profile accuracy.
  • Router Table Use with Fence - designed specifically for use on router tables equipped with a fence, providing controlled, repeatable cuts on stair treads, sills, and shelf edges with consistent results every time.

Why This Product

  • One-pass edge profiling saves time - the 3/16 in. radius bead and bull nose geometry profiles the full edge of a workpiece in a single router table pass, reducing setup time and finishing labor on furniture, shelving, and millwork projects.
  • Versatile finishing bit for common architectural details - equally suited to stair tread nosings, window sill edges, and shelf fronts, this bit covers a broad range of interior woodworking and finish carpentry applications from a single tool.
  • Designed for decorative effect beyond stock thickness - CMT specifically designed this bit so that the bead diameter can exceed the stock thickness, allowing woodworkers to add an elevated, furniture-quality finishing touch to thinner shelving and sill material.
  • HW carbide construction supports extended production use - tungsten carbide cutting edges maintain sharpness through high-volume runs on hardwood and softwood, making this bit a practical investment for shops producing cabinetry, furniture, or custom millwork in quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this bit be used freehand with a handheld router?

No. This bit is designed to be used only on router tables equipped with a fence. Freehand use without a fence and router table is not supported for this bit type. Always ensure the workpiece is fully controlled against the fence throughout the cut, and do not remove the workpiece while the bit is still routing.

What is the difference between the 7/8 in. cutting height and the 3/8 in. upper cutting height?

The 7/8 in. figure is the total cutting height of the bit - the full vertical length of the carbide cutting edge. The 3/8 in. upper cutting height (I1) refers to the upper portion of that cutting zone, which is relevant when setting the bit height at the router table to achieve the correct bead profile position relative to the workpiece edge.

What does CMT mean by using a cutter with a bead diameter wider than the stock thickness?

CMT notes that for a final decorative touch, you can use this bit on material that is thinner than the full 1 in. bead diameter. In that case, only a portion of the rounded bead profile is cut into the edge, producing a distinctive, furniture-quality rounded nose that overhangs or extends slightly beyond the stock thickness - a classic finishing technique on shelves and sills.

What collet size is required to use this bit?

This bit has a 1/4 in. shank, so it requires a router or router table with a 1/4 in. collet. Verify that your router table and router motor are equipped with a 1/4 in. collet before mounting this bit.
