Product Description

CMT Roundover Bit with Bearing - 1 1/8" Diameter, 5/16" Radius, 1/4" Shank is a precision-engineered edge-profiling router bit designed to produce smooth, consistent roundover profiles on wood, MDF, laminates, and a wide range of other materials. Built from fatigue-proof steel with carbide-tipped cutting edges, this 2-flute bit delivers repeatable results on handheld routers and router tables alike. The integrated ball bearing guides the bit along the workpiece edge, ensuring a uniform radius cut that softens sharp corners and creates professional furniture-grade edge profiles without the need for additional setup tools.

Key Features

  • Carbide-Tipped Cutting Edges (HW Material): Industrial-grade carbide tips stay sharp longer than high-speed steel, reducing the frequency of replacements and maintaining clean, splinter-free cuts through hardwood, softwood, plywood, MDF, chipboard, laminates, melamine, and plastic.
  • Fatigue-Proof Steel Body: The bit shank and body are manufactured from fatigue-proof steel, meaning the tool resists flexing and stress fractures under repeated use - giving you a safer, more stable cut especially at higher feed rates.
  • Integrated Ball Bearing Guide: The bearing pilots along the workpiece edge to control cutting depth automatically, eliminating the need for fences or edge guides and allowing freehand edge profiling with consistent results every pass.
  • 5/16" Radius Profile: Produces a smooth, moderate roundover that works well on furniture edges, cabinet doors, and shelving, striking a practical balance between a subtle softening effect and a more pronounced decorative profile.
  • 1/4" Shank Diameter: Compatible with the vast majority of handheld routers and compact router tables that accept 1/4" collets, making this bit highly versatile across a wide range of workshop setups.
  • 2-Flute (2-Tooth) Design: Dual cutting edges improve cut quality and balance at operating speed, producing a smoother surface finish and reducing the need for sanding after routing.
  • Right-Hand Rotation: Standard RH rotation is compatible with all conventional routers, requiring no special toolholding or modified setup.
  • Bearing Washer Orientation: The black bearing washer must be kept right-side-up during reassembly to correspond with bearing rotation - this design detail prevents the bit from unscrewing during operation, adding an important layer of reliability and safety.

Why This Product

  • Precise decorative edge detail in one pass: The 5/16" radius profile creates a clean, elegant roundover that transforms raw lumber edges into finished, furniture-quality surfaces without multiple passes or secondary profiling steps.
  • Works across 13 selectable radii in the CMT roundover series: This bit is part of a coordinated family offering 13 different radius options, allowing woodworkers to match profiles consistently across projects or switch to a new radius without learning a different system.
  • Engineered for safe, controlled cuts: The bearing guide controls depth of engagement automatically, and the fatigue-proof steel body with carbide-tipped edges minimizes the risk of unexpected bit failure during operation.
  • Broadly compatible with laminates and composites: The carbide-tipped cutting edges handle laminates, melamine, and plastic cleanly, making this bit a practical choice for cabinet shops and countertop fabricators working with man-made panel products as well as solid wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this bit be used on a router table or only with a handheld router?

This bit is suitable for use with both handheld routers and router tables. Note that within the CMT roundover series, bits with a radius from 1" to 1 1/2" are intended for router table use only. At 5/16" radius, this bit is appropriate for handheld and table-mounted routing.

What is the correct way to reassemble the bearing after cleaning?

When reassembling the bearing, keep the black bearing washer right-side-up so it corresponds with the direction of bearing rotation. Improper reassembly - specifically placing the washer upside-down - can cause the bit to unscrew during operation, which is a safety hazard.

What bearing diameter does this 5/16" radius roundover bit use?

Most CMT roundover bits use a 1/2" (12.7mm) bearing diameter. The exceptions are the 1 1/8" (28.6mm) and 1 1/4" (31.7mm) radius bits, which use a 3/4" (19mm) bearing. This 5/16" radius model uses the standard 1/2" bearing diameter.

What materials can this roundover bit cut cleanly?

The carbide-tipped cutting edges are suited for solid hardwood, softwood, plywood, MDF, chipboard, laminates, melamine, and plastic. The 1/16" radius model in the CMT line is specifically noted as excellent for finishing laminates - but this 5/16" radius bit handles the full range of listed materials effectively for edge profiling and corner softening work.
