Product Description

The CMT Solid Surface Rounding Over Bit (838.147.11) is a precision-ground carbide-tipped router bit designed to produce smooth, consistent roundover edge profiles on solid surface materials and a wide range of woodworking substrates. Built on a 1/4" shank with a 3/64" radius, this compact bit is ideal for softening sharp corners, finishing laminate edges, and adding refined decorative profiles to furniture, cabinetry, and paneling. With a right-hand rotation, 2-flute design, and hardmetal (HW) carbide cutting edges, it delivers clean, repeatable results in handheld router and router table applications alike.

Key Features

  • Hardmetal (HW) Carbide-Tipped Cutting Edges - durable carbide tips maintain a sharp cutting edge through extended use on solid surface, hardwood, softwood, and laminate materials, reducing the frequency of bit replacement.
  • 3/64" Radius Profile - this small, precise radius produces a delicate roundover that softens edges without removing significant material, making it well-suited for detail work, laminate finishing, and decorative edge treatments.
  • 1/4" Shank Diameter - compatible with a wide range of handheld routers and compact router tables that accept standard 1/4" collets, adding versatility across tool setups.
  • 2-Flute Design - dual cutting edges provide balanced material removal and a smoother surface finish with each pass, improving cut quality and reducing tear-out.
  • Right-Hand Rotation (RH) - matches the standard rotation direction of most routers, ensuring safe and proper engagement with the workpiece.
  • Ball-Bearing Pilot Guide - the integrated bearing rides along the edge of the workpiece to maintain consistent cutting depth and profile accuracy without the need for a fence, making edge profiling straightforward and repeatable.
  • Solid Surface Optimized Geometry - engineered specifically for solid surface materials, this bit produces clean profiles that require minimal sanding or post-processing.
  • 2" Total Length - compact overall length makes this bit easy to control in handheld routing applications and compatible with a variety of router configurations.

Why This Product

  • Purpose-built for solid surface work - the 838.147.11 is specifically designed for solid surface routing applications, making it a more reliable choice than general-purpose roundover bits when working with these materials. The geometry and carbide grade are matched to the demands of solid surface fabrication.
  • Delicate 3/64" radius for refined edge detailing - when a full roundover would be too aggressive, this small radius delivers a subtle, controlled profile that enhances the appearance of edges on furniture, countertops, and laminate panels without compromising the material's integrity.
  • Bearing-guided for hands-free depth control - the ball-bearing pilot eliminates the need for a fence or guide in many applications, allowing the bit to self-reference the workpiece edge and deliver uniform profiles across long runs and curved edges.
  • Compact 1/4" shank broadens router compatibility - the 1/4" shank makes this bit accessible to a wide range of compact and mid-size routers, so fabricators and woodworkers can use it across multiple tool setups without needing an adapter or specialty collet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the bearing diameter on this roundover bit?

All CMT roundover bits - including this 838.147.11 - have a 1/2" (12.7mm) bearing diameter, with the exception of the radius 1-1/8" and 1/4" bits which use a 3/4" (19mm) bearing. The 3/64" radius of this bit falls within the standard 1/2" bearing group.

Can this bit be used to finish laminate edges?

Yes. Small-radius roundover bits like this 3/64" radius model are well suited for finishing laminates and can virtually eliminate the filing required when using conventional trim bits, according to CMT's own shop tips for this product line.

Is there anything important to know when reassembling the bearing?

Yes. When reassembling the bearing, always keep the black bearing washer right side up to correspond with the bearing rotation direction. Improper reassembly can cause the bit to unscrew during use, which is a safety concern.

Is this bit compatible with handheld routers as well as router tables?

Yes. This bit with a 3/64" radius is suitable for use with handheld routers and standard router tables. Note that CMT specifies that only bits with radii from 1" to 1-1/2" are restricted to router table use only - this 3/64" radius bit does not carry that restriction.
