Knowing which system to reach for before the plans hit your desk saves a lot of headaches later. When the specs call for structural steel/rebar, the right approach depends on what you are actually building.
Conventional Steel Fabrication
Beams and columns get cut, drilled, and welded in a shop. Then trucked to the job and bolted up. Oldest method in the book and still the backbone of commercial work.
The control is what keeps engineers coming back. Every hole, every plate, every stiffener gets drawn and checked before a single piece hits the shop floor. Heavy loads, weird angles, long cantilevers. Conventional fab handles all of it.
Hospitals, schools, office towers. That is where you see it. Structural steel in construction of any real scale defaults to this method. Costs more than the alternatives. But when something goes sideways on a complex frame, you want the detailing done right from the start.
Bolted Frame Construction
Same idea as conventional but the welds stay in the shop. Everything bolts in the field. Holes get punched before the steel ever leaves. Ironworkers show up and start slamming bolts.
It moves. No waiting on weld inspections. No tarping up because the weather turned. A tight crew of structural steel framing contractors can top out a bolted frame before the concrete guys on the next job finish their second pour.
Warehouses, retail boxes, mid-rise offices. Bolting works for most things. Moment frames that need full-pen welds are the exception. For everyday connections, bolting is faster and cheaper.

Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings
PEMBs flip the process. The manufacturer engineers the whole frame in-house. Columns, rafters, girts, purlins all come bundled as a system. The design work is done before you even order.
They go up fast. Lighter pieces. Mostly bolted. The engineering is baked in so nobody on site is figuring out connections from scratch.
Warehouses love these. Distribution centers. Manufacturing floors. Any big open box where function matters more than looks. Not the move for multi-story or anything architecturally fancy. Light Gauge Steel Framing
Cold-formed sheet steel instead of hot-rolled sections. Studs and track, same idea as wood framing but metal.
Competes directly with wood in apartments, hotels, assisted living. Goes up about as fast. Crews that know the system move quick. And the stuff does not care about termites, does not soak up humidity, does not fuel a fire. In South Florida, that sells itself.
Not a heavy load system. Six stories and under is where it lives. For those buildings, it works.
Steel Truss Systems
Trusses are for spans that would need a beam the size of a truck. Triangles of smaller members doing the work together. Top and bottom chords take the bending. Diagonals carry the shear.
Gymnasiums. Auditoriums. Airport concourses. Any roof where columns in the middle of the floor are a non-starter. Trusses cost more in engineering and shop time. Rigid Frame Construction
Joints stiff enough to resist wind and seismic loads without bracing. No X-braces cluttering the walls. No shear walls blocking the layout.
Industrial buildings and warehouses lean on rigid frames hard. The connections are pricier than simple shear tabs. But the interior stays flexible forever. Owners like that.
Steel Arch Construction
Curved steel carrying loads in compression. Light members spanning distances that would bury a straight beam.
This is niche work. Hangars. Field houses. Event spaces where the roof makes the statement. Engineering gets complicated. Erection has to follow a tight sequence. Not a lot of crews do this day in and day out.
How To Pick
Height points the way. Multi-story means conventional or bolted. Single-story opens up PEMBs and rigid frames.
Spans narrow it further. Big open spaces call for trusses or arches. Smaller bays stick with beam and column.
Budget and clock are always in the room. PEMBs and light gauge win on speed and upfront cost. Conventional fab costs more but handles anything the architect draws.
